The Backup Administrator’s View of the VMware Business Process Desktop

Besides the VMware vSphere Data Protection announcement which you have read about here on the blog, little time has been spent on discussing a lot of the End-User Computing (EUC) announcements and advancements that were also made at VMworld.  While right now we are in the beginning phases of this EUC wave, I can tell you our technologists are hard at work here in EMC Backup and Recovery Systems at keeping pace with this change in the way our end-users interface with applications and data in the data center.

One concrete example of this was EMCs inclusion in a smaller announcement from VMware involving the View® infrastructure suite.  Some of you may already utilize View in your environments, replacing physical computing devices at the end-point for thin-clients connecting to virtual desktops. Clearly the View solution contains so much flexibility that it provides a compelling paradigm shift in many EUC use cases. VMworld brought the introduction of the View Business Process Desktop solution, which enables VMware and its Partner Ecosystem to truly provide a complete and robust solution for EUC as a managed solution, in call centers, offshore development environments and contract worker scenarios.

The need for simple and efficient end-user backup and recovery is just as important in this use case scenario just as it is for a more classic virtual desktop implementation.  Providing simplified end-user level recovery of data from backups can greatly reduce the increased burden on the IT helpdesk from these contract and offshore sites.

EMC Avamar is a solution whose feature set is truly optimized for such an implementation. Not simply just from the end-user data perspective, but also in protecting the various View infrastructure data constructs and databases—everything from protecting end-user files stored in a persona share and thinapp via NDMP, to View composer server databases via Avamar’s extensive Database Plugin library.

Also, starting on September 24th, VMware will be hosting a Daily Boot Camp training session (provided on-demand) to highlight the various components of this solution. A new session will be posted daily. Included in this series is a session dedicated to Business Process Desktop Recovery using EMC Avamar. Be sure to visit here on the 24th for information on accessing the on-demand training sessions.

View is the first stop on a journey of transforming how businesses implement end-user computing and the transformation of Backup and Recovery is in lock step here at EMC.

The Right Architecture Is Priceless, Part I Evolving data protection technology and expanding requirements have completely transformed the backup industry. Unfortunately, with such rapid change, many organizations have fallen into the chaos of an accidental architecture. Read More...
