Big Data Backup Got You Down? We’ve Got You Covered!

By Caitlin Gordon, Senior Product Marketing Manager, EMC Backup Recovery Systems

In case you haven’t heard (which would be shocking if EMC is part of your life in any way), cloud computing and big data are transforming IT.

Most of us focus on how this transformation enables applications to run more efficiently in the cloud or how big data can give us insight like never before, but the transformation goes much deeper.  It’s really an end-to-end transformation of IT from your application environment to your backup and recovery strategy.

For the past five years, we’ve seen cloud have this effect on IT.  In the beginning, many companies began virtualizing and realized that their traditional backup solutions could not keep up, becoming the bottleneck to virtualization adoption.  Today, most companies know that it’s critical to have a fast, efficient and reliable backup solution to support their virtual environment. Thanks to EMC Avamar, companies have been able to accelerate virtualization with next-generation backup and recovery.

Today, big data is in a similar place that cloud was five years ago.  Chuck’s blog last week sums it up well – “The Business Wants Big Data – Are You Ready?”.  In other words, big data is coming whether you’re ready or not.

Never fear, EMC can help you ensure that big data can provide value to your organization from day one.  Part of this preparation includes having a big data backup and recovery conversation.  Just like the rest of your environment, big data requires backup, but presents additional challenges.

Specifically, no matter how you define it (I’m personally a fan of the 3 V’s), big data is BIG – which means you can’t or won’t want to back all of it up.  However, the portion you do backup presents the following challenges:

a) Data deluge – the volume of data growth – 50x this decade alone.

b) Performance and scale – with so much data, you’ll need unprecedented throughput, efficiency and capacity or you’ll risk not making your backup windows.

c) Data islands – without a consolidated backup strategy, you’ll end up creating separate backup solutions for big data.

Luckily for you, EMC Data Domain deduplication storage systems are ideal for big data backup.  Data Domain systems are purpose built backup appliances used in conjunction with EMC or any 3rd party backup application or native backup utility. No matter what big data system you’re using (EMC Greenplum, EMC Isilon, Teradata, etc.), Data Domain systems offer advanced integration with the most effective backup tools for that environment – providing the fastest, most efficient backup and recovery.

How?  Our high-speed inline deduplication provides 10 to 30x reduction in backup storage required and ensures you can backup your big data environment within backup windows.  Specifically – the DD990 offers up to 31 TB/hour ingest so you can backup up to 248 TB in less than 8 hours. In addition, Data Domain systems can protect up to 65 PB of logical capacity in a single system.  Finally, Data Domain systems eliminate data islands by enabling the backup of your entire environment (using NFS, CIFS, VTL, DD Boost and/or NDMP) to a single Data Domain system.

Here’s a quick table that summarizes exactly why Data Domain systems are the ideal big data backup solution:

Big data is coming to your organization and when it does, we want you to be prepared with a comprehensive backup strategy.  To learn more about how EMC has you covered when it comes to big data backup, check out the ‘EMC Backup Meets Big Data’ webcast.

The Right Architecture Is Priceless, Part I Evolving data protection technology and expanding requirements have completely transformed the backup industry. Unfortunately, with such rapid change, many organizations have fallen into the chaos of an accidental architecture. Read More...
