- Backup Transformation from “Across the Pond”
Greetings from Europe!
In my first posting, I wanted to add to The Backup Window conversation by highlighting some recent customer experiences in Europe. Like other parts of the world, customers from Europe, the Middle East and Africa trust EMC for backup, recovery and disaster recovery for data and applications.
It’s one thing for me to tell you about these successes and another thing for them to tell you their stories. Thankfully, we are fortunate to have such great customers in Europe who are willing to publicly share their experiences.

But I will give you some hints. First, they are all seeing tangible benefits from backing up their virtualized environments using EMC backup and recovery solutions. Smaller backup windows, faster recoveries, less time spent managing their backup infrastructure – you will see all of these benefits in these stories.
Another common theme you will see is that these customers needed to modernize their backup infrastructures in order to accelerate their virtualization initiatives. Tape is a roadblock to virtualization. EMC’s disk-based deduplication helps accelerate the journey.
These stories quantify the benefits. Bank Zachodni improved recovery speeds and created a flexible backup environment for both its physical and virtual environments; Derby College reduced the backup time for its 80% virtualized environment to just 3-4 hours and improved recovery times significantly and the city of Oulu documented a 28% reduction in data protection costs as a result of EMC’s backup solutions and completely eliminating tape from its environment.
What would also be interesting is to show what kind of ROI customers are seeing. I will have more to say on that soon – stay tuned.
